The Whiipping Man

Posted: April 23, 2012 in Uncategorized

Francisco and I saw a great production of The Whipping Man at Curtain Call Theater in Latham, NY. It’s a Civil War drama about a Confederate soldier who meets two of his father’s slaves after the war. It inspired me to read about the talented playwright, Matthew Lopez. In a NYTimes profile dated January 27, 2011, he’s quoted as saying:

“I don’t know if you need to belong to a certain group to tell a story. If you did, I would only write about gay Puerto Rican guys who live in Park Slope and have an obsession with stinky cheese.”

He added, more seriously, “We as Americans have to take responsibility for our past, even if most of us in the country today are not descendants of slaveholders.”

Thank you, Mr. Lopez.
